Bernard Buffet (1928 – 1999, French) “Le Cirque: Deux Clowns” is a limited-edition etching in colors, hand signed and numbered IV/XXX in pencil. There is also a faded stamp to the verso. The print is ‘after’ the original 1955 oil painting on canvas that measures 102 x 60 inches. Depicted are two clowns with sad, elongated faces. One is playing the violin while the other watches. The image measures 6 x 4 inches and the 15 x 12-inch sheet is double matted in a 21 x 17-inch frame. The work of art is characterized by Buffet’s use of black lines delineating the forms as well as his Expressionism style that defined him as one of the anti-abstract group of artists known as “L’homme Temoin” (Man as Witness) who advocated representational (rather than abstract) art.
