James Rosenquist (1933-2017, American.) "Black Star" is a large-scale, limited edition (66/78) two-color etching with pochoir on paper, created in 1978. It is hand-signed, framed and matted. The image measures 17.5" x 36" and framed, it is 30" x 46.5." A calling card of Rosenquist’s work is the separation of canvases, or images, into sections - often three, alongside images which appear off center or cut off. This is a reference back to his early days painting billboards, where large signs would have to be separated into sections to be painted, often cutting images in half. Ships free in the USA.
James Rosenquist was born in North Dakota and studied studio art at the University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis. In 1955, he moved to New York City where he studied at The Art Students League for one year and met artists from the generation that preceded Pop art (the Abstract Expressionists.)
Beginning in the late 1950s, James Rosenquist, along with Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, was instrumental in the emergence of the Pop Art movement. He had experience in advertising and creating huge billboard-size paintings.
