Linda Le Kinff (b. 1949-France) "Grand Orchestra" - This piece is a framed, hand signed, serigraph on paper (2002.) The image was originally created in 1996 as an oil on wood panel. Framed and matted, it measures 30" x 40."

“Grande Orchestre” demonstrates the range of mood Le Kinff can elicit from a single theme. The composition is structured using cubist geometric lines and angles. The piece is virtually a mosaic of triangles, trapezoids, and lozenges (diamond shaped images) which miraculously comes together to create figures, costumes, instruments and sheet music. The geometric forms also constitute the negative space between three-dimensional forms – green, purple, and red triangles, for example, fill the space between the musicians. This image seems to float on the surface instead of receding back into depth, a device that allows for Le Kinff’s abstraction to take over and play a dominant role over the representational component. The image has a pronounced sense of electricity and sharpness, energy and tempo. The powerful thrust of the pianist’s eyebrow and bow tie virtually symbolize the dynamism of the picture.

Linda Le Kinff was born in Paris in 1949 to French and Brazilian parents. She started her career as a painter at the age of 20. In the 1970's she traveled to India, Tibet, Mexico and Italy. She lived and worked in Italy for twelve years learning ancient techniques" tempera, egg painting and the gold leaf method taught by masters in Florence and Livorno. She also served an apprenticeship in wood engraving, copper engraving, as well as learning the modern techniques or acrylic and airbrushing. In Paris in 1975 she learned lithography, meeting the artists, Brayer, Corneille and Lapique. In 1976 she met Okamoto Taro, the Japanese Picasso, who introduced her to the sand and sumi technique. In 1981 she spent six months in Morocco where she worked with Chabia, the poetess of the abstraction movement. She returned to school in south Tyrol where she became interested in painted, polished and varnished woodwork, using a special material made of casein. She applied it to her painting but still kept the classic expression on canvas.
