(After) J.J. Audubon, ''No. 92, Plate 459, "Leach's Petrel-Forked Tailed Petrel, 1. Male 2. Female, Lith Printed & Col by JT Bowen, Philad." This color lithograph measures 6.5" x 10.5" (image) and with gilt frame and suede mat under glass, the measurements are 17" x 18." It is "after" the 1840-1844 Octavo Edition of Audubon's work.
Plate 459, LEACH'S PETREL-FORKED TAILED PETREL, The Octavo Editions, called "THE BIRDS OF AMERICA" from "Drawings Made in the United States and its Territories," was published in seven volumes by the author and J.B. Chevalier, New York and Philadelphia, 1840-1844. The Octavo series measures 1/8 the size of the Double Elephant Portfolio. Unlike the original Havell edition, this was issued with text and was considerably smaller--about 10.5" x 6.5." The plates, lithographed in color, measure, again, 10.5" x 6.5." They bear the same legend as the Havell edition except that in the lower right-hand corner, J.T. Bowen is shown as the lithographer.
