2020 is the 100 year anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution granting the right to vote to women.
The original image, "COSTUME: GLOSTER HEMING" was created by Indiana in 1966 for an opera called, "The Mother of Us All" (a 1947 composition by Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson inspired by Susan B. Anthony.) Indiana’s original 49 cut paper costumes, scene designs and 30 ink sketches for "The Mother of Us All" are among the treasures of the McNay Art Museum’s Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts. Indiana designed "The Mother of Us All" on two occasions, at the Walker Art Center in 1967 and years later at the Santa Fe Opera in 1976. In the more elaborate 1976 production, Indiana's unmistakable imprint, including the stencil lettering of the VOTE sash, brought "The Mother of Us All" into the Pop art era and beyond due to its themes concerning gender roles, political rights, and civil discourse.
