Max Papart (1911 – 1994, French) “Streetwalker” (1984) Limited-Edition Color Carborundum Gravure Etching, hand-signed by the artist in pencil in the lower right and numbered (30/75) in the lower left. The sheet measures 23 x 30.5 inches, and it has been encased in a sealed plexiglass box frame (estimated value of $500) measuring 28.5 x 36 x 2 inches. Carborundum etching plates are unique three-dimensional hand-inked plates that emboss the heavy paper during the printmaking process creating texture and adding depth to the artwork . The bold, multi-color image appears to be divided in two sections, one features a bright, full moon against a deep blue sky in the upper left and the other depicts the profile of a man clad in brightly contrasting colors. Papart’s style combining Surreal, Pop, Abstract, and Cubism is evident in this work of art in a balance of form, structure, color and harmony.
