Robert Indiana (1928 – 2018) “Tilt” from ‘The American Dream Portfolio’ (1997) Limited edition color screenprint pencil signed by the artist in the lower right margin and numbered 289/395 in the lower left margin. The image measures 16.5 x 14 inches, and with mat and frame, the work of art is 25 x 22 inches. The piece features signs consisting of stars, circles, stenciled numbers and letters that make up symbols of Americana, including the numbers of well-traveled highway routes 29, 37, 40, and 66; the phrase ‘Take All’ representing capitalism; the word ‘Tilt’ from pinball machines, and the all-encompassing phrase, ‘The American Dream”.
The image is based on Pop Artist Indiana’s 1961 72 x 60-inch oil painting on canvas titled “The American Dream I” owned by New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). A larger (39 x 32-inch) silkscreen was issued in 1971 in an edition of 200.
