(After) Salvador Dali (1904-1989, Spain) “Cervantes” (circa 1965-1968) An etching of novelist, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, author of ‘Don Quixote’. The image is one of ‘The Five Spanish Immortals’ Collection commissioned in the early 1960’s and referenced in ‘Albert Field, The Official Catalog of the Graphic Works of Salvador Dali’, Figure 65-7 B and page 236. This re-strike etching is believed to be from a later edition published by the ‘Collector’s Guild Ltd., New York’ and is signed in the plate in the lower left. (The etchings in the original edition were not plate signed.) The image measures 6.75 x 5 inches, the sheet is 12.25 x 11 inches, and with the black linen mat and simple black frame, the work of art is 16.5 x 20.5 inches. (Note: There are small imperfections in the paper that are concealed by the mat and frame: the top margin has been trimmed and there is a pale stain in the margin.)
Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616, Spain) is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the Spanish language and one of the world's pre-eminent novelists. His masterpiece, ‘Don Quixote’, was illustrated by Salvador Dali and has been translated into more languages than any other book except the Bible.
