Joseph-Victor Roux-Champion (1871 – 1953, French) “Portrait of Maximilien Luce” (circa 1920’s) – Aquatint etching of the Luce, the French neo-impressionist painter-engraver in his studio at an easel. The work of art is plate-signed by Roux-Champion in the lower left; the image measures 10 x 7.75 inches, the sheet is 14 x 11.5 inches, and with white mat and black wood frame, it measures 21.5 x 17.5 inches. (Note: The image is in good condition, however behind the frame, there are minor imperfections in the sheet including a small loss in the lower left corner of the paper and some soft handling creases in some of the edge areas.)
Maximilien Luce (1858 – 1941, French) was one of the great representatives of the neo-impressionist movement. Joseph-Victor Roux-Champion was a multi-talented artist and a student of Gustave Moreau, as well as a friend of Matisse, Rouault, Albert Marquet, and Renoir. In the 1920’s, Roux-Champion created a portfolio of etchings of some of the most important Impressionists and Post Impressionists of the time, including Luce, Maurice Denis, and Paul Signac, as well as Emile Bernard, Ker Xavier-Roussel, and Louis Valtat.
