Hermann Lederle (b. 1958, West Germany) “Portrait of a Man” (1988) Oil painting on canvas and board with gold leaf in artist’s painted wood frame, signed and dated on the verso. Overall measurements are 19.5 x 19.5 x 1.5 inches. (There is a small chip on the man’s forehead and some minor surface soil, but the piece is magnificent.) The frame and a portion of surface is divided into square shapes, and the gold leaf in the background changes dramatically depending on how and where the sun (or light) hits it transforming the painted imagery. The artist lived in Manhattan (NYC) at the time this portrait painting was created.
Hermann Lederle is a critically admired artist currently living and working in Los Angeles. He studied in Germany and received a formal fine arts education at the San Francisco Art Institute. His work has been widely exhibited in prominent galleries in the U.S. and Europe and may be found in the private collections of notables including Ringo Starr and Eric Stolz. This piece is from the collection of Laurie Frank of Frank Picture Gallery (Santa Monica), a gallery that has exhibited Lederle’s work several times over the years.
