Irving Amen (1918 – 2011, American) “Chessmen” (circa 1960’s) – Limited edition black and white etching, hand signed in pencil by the artist in the lower right margin, titled and numbered (53/90) in the lower left margin. The image measures 7.75 x 9.75 inches, and with double matting and frame, the work of art is 12.25 x 16.25 inches. Depicted are elaborate, whimsical pieces on a chess board. The king appears quizzical and sports a curled moustache and pointed beard; the buxom queen is featured in profile; the pawn has a nervous look; a proud steed represents the knight; and a castle tower with a pennant blowing in the wind represents the rook.
In addition to sculpture and painting, Irving Amen was a master printmaker who produced thousands of woodcuts, etchings, lithographs, and serigraphs. Chess was among the many subjects of his artwork.
