Rene Gruau (1909 – 2004, Italian) “Diorissimo; Femme Fleur - Les Iris” (aka Flower Woman; Dior Diorissimo) Color lithograph with the Mourlot, Paris embossed stamp, numbered EA 46/80 (Artist’s Proof), and Gruau’s G and star signature in pencil in the lower margin. The sheet is approximately 46 x 20 inches, and with the black and gold frame, the work of art is 49 x 22.75 inches. Following the birth of Christian Dior’s ‘Diorissimo’ perfume, the brand worked with Gruau to develop an image for the floral lily of the valley scent. This work depicts a woman whose body is intertwined with a flower’s stem while her head is surrounded by blooms. The original image was created circa 1975 and a lithograph was issued in 1998.
Count Renato Zavagli Ricciardelli della Caminate (professionally known as René Gruau) was a fashion illustrator whose exaggerated portrayal of fashion design through painting has had a lasting effect on the fashion industry. He was one of the best known and favorite artists of the haute couture world during the 1940s and 50s, having worked with major fashion magazines (Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar) as well as legendary ateliers including Balenciaga, Balmain, Lavin, Givenchy, and Schiaparelli. He also designed artwork for advertising and posters.
