Yvaral (Jean-Pierre Vasarely) (1934–2002, French) “50 Shades of Blue” (1976) Limited edition color silkscreen serigraph, signed in pencil by the artist in the lower right margin and numbered (50/200) in the lower left margin. The image measures 24.5 x 24.5 inches, and the unframed sheet is 29.5 inches square. Beginning in 1975, Op- and Kinetic artist, Yvaral created designs using algorithmic methods that he called “numerical art.” He used a computer to digitally process and manipulate images and then finalized the work by painting by hand. This image was originally created in 1976 as a 47.25 x 47.25-inch acrylic on canvas painting called “Horizon Structure BB” that was sold at Sotheby’s New York in 2013 for $12,500. Yvarel was the son of Op Art pioneer, Victor Vasarely.
