James Coignard (1925 – 2008, French) Untitled mixed media on paper, hand signed in the lower right, The sheet is 19.5 x 19.5 inches, and has been mounted, matted and placed in a frame measuring 31.25 x 31.25 inches. On the verso, there is a label from Nahan Galleries, owned by Ken Nahan of New Orleans, who represented Coignard’s work for many years. Nahan’s successor, Elliott Gallery, still carries Coignard’s artwork. This work of art features a red rectangle and the letters ‘ AB’ in an old-style font.
James Coignard’s style began with expressionism and progressed to abstract art commonly incorporating random spots, shapes, typographical characters into mixed media pieces. He is known for using deep, heavy texturing as well as his signature primary colors of blue, red, yellow, green, and black in both his mixed media pieces and his works on paper. Coignard’s work may be found in the collections of many museums, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the British Museum, London; Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; and the Israel Museum, Jerusalem.
